Obsidian is the ground. Mercury is whatever is still in motion. Move through the pool, press and hold to gather it, release to split it.
Saving is a phase change.
Pending data is liquid. When the server confirms, it sets into obsidian, starting from where you acted. If it fails, the liquid retreats and nothing pretends it worked.

Logging a meal drops mercury into the column. It merges, the surface rings, and the number follows.
